Dealing With Pornography

Pornography is a growing problem for both men and women. I deal with a lot of sexual addiction and have found this resource helpful which was compiled from various resources. It is free for your use.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Identify an accountability partner and meet regularly.
    1. Meet with them for prayer and encouragement
  2. Install an Internet filter on your computer with your accountability partner having the only password.

    2. Memorize the above scriptures.
      1. Place one on your computer.
      2. Carry one on an index card and look at it throughout the day.
      3. Write it on paper and tape them around the home on walls.
    3. Read good books on it:
      1. Every Mans Battle by Stephen Arterburn
      2. Good Men Are Tempted by Bill Perkins
    4. Retrain your reactions and visual responses:
      1. Think “STOP!” every time you even glance or start to think about it. Even say it out loud.
      2. Immediately look away from magazines, websites, and scantily clad women…walk away and don’t turn around.
      3. Remind yourself that you belong to God each time you are tempted.
      4. Flee any temptation
        1. Shut computer if you feel even slightly tempted.
        2. Call someone if tempted and let them know.
  • If tempted, leave the house and put distance between you and the temptation.
  1. Change the habit that leads to the temptation.
    1. For example, if you’re tempted late at night after roommate goes to bed, don’t use computer after that time.
    2. If tempted when writing a paper, don’t connect the internet.
  2. Find out what void the temptation is filling and replace it with Christ and something healthy.

Why Is It Important to Overcome This Addiction?

  1. It will ruin your future marriage if not overcome.
  2. It hurts your relationship with Christ.
  3. It hinders the work of the Holy Spirit
  4. It will ultimately damage your view of women.
  5. It damages self-esteem.
  6. It can hinder the furthering of the Gospel in your life.
  7. It will control you until you decide to control it.
  8. It can lead to other illegal things like child pornography.
    1. I know someone who accidentally downloaded child porn when they paid for adult porn. They spent time in prison for an “accident.”  It was a leader in a church.
